You have just adopted a puppy. Admittedly, he is too cute but he starts to cry as soon as you are no longer in the same room as him, and even worse, he wakes you up at night by crying and will end up disturbing the neighbors too… Find out why your puppy has such behavior and what to do about it.
Understand why your puppy is crying
The main cause of your puppy’s crying is anxiety : indeed, the anxious puppy cries because he is separated from you, his owners. Crying is then considered a kind of barking. The anxious puppy immediately calms down with its owners but when it is separated from them, it is in full distress so it barks, cries, can also destroy what surrounds it and even go so far as to defecate everywhere. . These behaviors are indicative of deep anxiety in young dogs.
The causes of anxiety in dogs are also very diverse:
Separation anxiety : it is a behavioral disorder that is expressed by signs of distress when the dog is separated from its owners or people to whom it is very attached. This is the case when they do not perform the detachment necessary for the independence of the young puppy as his mother would have done. Thus, when the puppy then sees his only landmark leaving, that is to say his master, he becomes anxious and manifests his distress by destroying and barking. Separation anxiety is then a consequence of hyperattachment .
Phobias: a phobia is anxiety linked to significant fears outside. It is a disproportionate fear response to a stimulus from the normal environment. Basically, fear is a normal reaction, it allows the dog to protect himself, it is limited in time. In contrast, the phobia is an amplified reaction that blocks all learning.
Hyperactivity specific to Hs-Ha syndrome ( hypersensitivity-hyperactivity ): this is a developmental disorder in dogs which can be responsible for anxiety but also for secondary hyperattachment.
What to do if your puppy is crying?
To suppress this behavior, it is advisable to teach the puppy to detach itself from you , if it has not already been done, and therefore to teach him to be alone .
Even if it may seem difficult to you, it is advisable that your puppy does not sleep in your room because it will only reinforce:
his attachment: which can be at the origin of the problem as we saw above.
its dominant character: which can pose other behavioral problems.
Do not respond systematically to requests from your puppy, it is up to you to initiate contact with him. So do not hesitate to come and get him to play even if he is napping!
If you want to leave your puppy in one room in the house initially, you can. Try to spend some time with him in the room in question, especially before leaving him (at least at the beginning), so that he does not associate the setting in this place with your departure; try to get him used to spending more and more time there, even if you are there.
Before you go, leave him in this place, locked up, but don’t stay too far away so that he knows you are there, for at least ten minutes. This will reassure him and prevent him from associating this place with your absence.
If he cries, do not respond to his calls , even to scold him, because he will associate your return with his crying and not with the scolding! He will therefore start over each time.
When you come looking for him, don’t hug him or let him worry: ignore him for ten minutes and push him away if he seeks contact; thus, he will not associate your return and release with hugs.
Break the ritual of departure and return : you must, before leaving, ignore your puppy for a good half an hour, so that he does not associate the departure with the lack of contact between you. You must do the same when you return: if he is celebrating you, push him away or order him to go to bed (scolding him), and you will only re-establish contact, on your own initiative, only half an hour later.
If he messed up, don’t scold him or clean up in front of him: he wouldn’t understand and would be more anxious.
Finally, to help your puppy learn to be alone, there is a product that releases soothing canine pheromones into the air in your home ( Adaptil ). This pheromone helps reduce stress and anxiety in dogs when left alone. The use of this product must be done at the same time as the application of all the educational advice mentioned above.
If, despite all of this, your puppy continues to cry, see a veterinarian.
